One place you can save money on these fees, however, is with the car rental company, or car hire company as they are known in Europe. When you are renting a car overseas, watch out for these common fees, and don’t pay them if you don’t need to!

Service Fee for Booking at the Counter

When you are traveling overseas, make sure you book your car rental early. Even if you do it the night before you need the car, you will save money. Renting the car from the counter will always cost more, and sometimes quite a bit more. Call the car hire company before you need the car to reserve one, or use the Internet to make your booking.

Also, try to make your arrangements before you leave America. You will find that this saves you money, as you will not have to worry about exchange rates or contracts written in a foreign language. Remember, if you sign a contract that has hidden fees or clauses in it, you are bound to pay those fees of follow those clauses. When you do your car rental booking in the States, you will be given a contract in English.

Late Return Charges

Late return charges are a common fee that car hire companies charge, yet this one is quite easy to avoid. Find out the specific time that you need to return the car. This will be different with each company. Some will start your rental day at the time you rent the car, while others have a specific hour that they expect cars to be returned. Even if you return the car on the right day, if it is returned at the wrong time you will be charged a late return fee. This can be as much as a full day’s rental, even if the car is just an hour late.

Gas Charges

Like car rental companies in the United States, car hire companies overseas will usually charge a gas charge. Find out if you can return the car on full to avoid this charge. The car rental company is going to charge more for the gas than you will pay at the fuel station. This gas charge may not be thoroughly explained to you when you pick up the car, so make sure you ask about it. Remember, once the car hire company has your credit card, you can be charged any fees outlined in the contract, even if they do not explain the fee to you verbally.

Consider Driving a Stick

In Europe, manual transmissions are more common than automatic transmissions. If you need to rent an automatic, you will pay an additional fee. If you know how to drive a stick shift, you should use one to save money on the car rental.

Have Drivers Who Are the Right Age

Most car hire companies will charge an additional fee for young or old drivers. Those who are under 25 or over 70 will cost more as drivers on your rental agreement. To avoid this fee, try to have someone in your group who is between 25 and 70 to serve as the driver. Additionally, you will pay a fee if you add more than one driver to the contract.

Malaysia’s Pulau Ketam or Crab Island is not the archetypal tropical paradise with swaying coconut palms and sandy beaches. Pulau Ketam is nestled in the mouth of the Klang River in Selangor State, and is home to Pulau Ketam Village and Sungai Lima Village, which are separated by primacy forest. The former is the focal point of the island, where zinc-roofed houses standing on stilts is home to more than six thousand residents who are mainly of the Teochew dialect.

Motorcycles and bicycles are the only traffic on the ironwood boardwalks that link the houses. Jalan Besar, the main thoroughfare, springs to life in the early morning with the hoarse roar of seafood traders, the clang of spatula against pans in coffee-shops, the salty smell of dried seafood, the whirr of machines packing seafood into plastic bags and the aroma of stir-fried oyster omelette wafting in the air. The jetty at Koperasi Herr Ming should not be missed as there is a lot of activity with the loading and unloading of seafood destined for home kitchens and restaurants in Kuala Lumpur and other major towns. The wet market is also a good spot to start one’s tour of the settlement.

Two temples worth visiting are the Nan Thiam Keng Temple and Hock Leng Keng Temple, where wall paintings and sculptured dragons adorn their interiors. On the 28th day of the fourth lunar month, the ear-deafening clash of cymbals, the staccato thump of drums and colourful costumes greet devotees to the Hock Leng Keng Temple as the deity’s birthday is celebrated with prayers and opera performances. Come the sixth day of the sixth lunar month, the main attention focuses on the Nan Thiam Keng Temple as devotees honour the deity with supplications, mini concert and Chinese opera shows. The celebrations at both temples last 14 days, and see throngs of worshippers from the mainland as well.

The dozen or so seafood restaurants at Pulau Ketam Village can excite even the most discerning gourmet. Dishes such as crunchy deep-fried squids, kam heong crabs, tom yam steamed grouper and drunken prawns have turned many dieters into gluttons. Take your pick from one of the following list of famous restaurants: Restaurant Ping Heong, Restaurant Mei Sek, Restaurant Seng Tian, Restaurant Kuai Lok Hian, Nan Heng Seafood Restaurant, Kim Hoe Seafood Restaurant and Restaurant Seafood Kia Hiong Haun. For tea, many coffee shops have stalls serving oyster omelet, cockle omelet, fried anchovies, anchovy fritters and shrimp fritters.

Adventurous visitors can visit an aquaculture farm off the seas of the island. The fishes thrash vigorously in the waters when food is scattered to them. Why not buy some live fish and have them cooked at any restaurant on the island?

For an adrenalin rush, take a speedboat ride round the island with a stopover at Sungei Lima Village. During your journey, the speedboat may need to refill in a floating petrol station in the turquoise sea! In the evening, take a stroll to Couple’s Bridge to watch a burgundy sun descend down the horizon. This bridge is so named as it is a popular spot for courting couples to relax.

For good buys before goodbye, many shops catering to tourists can be found in Pulau Ketam Village, offering high quality satay fish, deep fried cuttlefish, mui heong saltfish, dried shrimps, dried sea cucumber, fish balls and fish rolls.

Traveling to the island from Kuala Lumpur is a breeze. First, get to Port Kelang (Southport) which is only one hour’s drive away, and take a 30-minute ferry ride to the island. Ferry services are available everyday at 45-minute intervals from 8:45am to 6:30pm. From Pulau Ketam to Port Kelang, services are between 7:45am to 5:30pm.

Lopez Island is the first stop made by the Washington State Ferries among the San Juan Islands. The Islands are located in the northwest corner of the state along the U.S.-Canada international border. The island is 15 miles long and eight miles wide. Lopez Island is located approximately 50 miles west of Victoria, British Columbia, and 100 miles north of Seattle, Washington.

You won’t find very many cars on Lopez Island, however, if you are handicapped and have a place card and/or license plate you will have preferred treatment on the ferry. It may take some preparation ahead of time but it will be well worth your time to do this planning, this a must see and experience destination to enjoy. There are vineyards, farmlands and parks; then for water sports there is whale watching, fishing, clamming and crabbing, oh, yes don’t forget kayaking.

The ferry system is in the process of upgrading and re-evaluating their service for disabled passengers. Although it is still a “work in progress,” they are striving to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to conveniently access and use the ferry system. You can call ahead if that makes you feel more comfortable, but to get to the ferry terminal early will work just as well and just let them know what your requirements are.

Lopez Village, the main town, is only four miles from the ferry landing. Here, everything from art galleries and shops to restaurants and bakeries are within walking distance of one another. Lopez Island is has many natural attractions, along with clamming and crabbing.

Spencer Spit State Park is worth a visit and Shark Reef Sanctuary has 45 acres of day trails and scenic costal vistas; hundreds of seals hang out on the big rocks offshore. Even if you can’t access these areas the variety of birds and wildlife on the island can be observed almost everywhere, they are plentiful and don’t forget your binoculars. Hummel Lake has accessible restrooms and the rest of the area is accessible with assistance, it is gravel landscape.

The only fully handicap hotel on the island is Edenwild, it has a ramp to the back door and one room is handicap accessible which is room #3. This is a non-smoking and no pets allowed facility; also children under 12 are discouraged, there is a smoking area in the garden section of the property. This is basically a bed and breakfast type accommodation and has the theme of a county inn. It is located about five miles from the ferry dock.

Visiting the other three San Juan Islands by ferry from Lopez Island is easy as well, and can be an enjoyable way to see the communities of all the San Juan Islands. While you are visiting the other islands and are interested in a whale-watching and wildlife tours, San Juan Excursions have a handicap accessible vessel and they sail out of Friday Harbor so you can enjoy that along with your ferry trips to the other islands, unfortunately Lopez Island doesn’t have this accommodation, but that will give you a good excuse to visit the other islands and the opportunity to explore. English weather has a reputation that is far worse than it deserves. Yes, it can be damp and grey; yes, it can change quickly. Summer, especially July and August, are the busiest as far as visitor numbers are concerned. Before You Travel

• If you need a visa to enter Britain, apply early, as a delayed visa could mean that you have to cancel your trip.
• Britain has been free of rabies for many years, and all import and export of animals is strictly controlled. You must not bring animals into Britain, unless they have been vaccinated and been issued with an animal health passport.
• You should have travel and medical insurance for your trip. While in the country, you are covered for free emergency treatment, but all other treatment has to be paid for. (This does not apply if you are a citizen of the European Union or a country with which Britain has a reciprocal health-care arrangement)
• Check with your mobile phone provider that your phone will work in Britain.
• Electrical appliances in Britain use a three-pin plug, so you may need an adaptor to use any electrical items you bring with you. Electricity is supplied at 240V, 50Hz.

Getting Around

The cheapest way to get around England is by coach. National Express and Megabus are two coach companies that cover routes all across the country at reasonable rates.

Train fares vary widely, depending on the route, operator and time travelled. If you can be flexible, you can obtain good fares. Train fares can be even cheaper if you book up to 7 days in advance.

England’s road network is extensive and car hire firms have offices at all major ports, airports and many large stations. And if you fancy travelling in style you can even hire a luxury limousine and chauffeur to whisk you from place to place.

Britain has accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets, from swanky top-class hotels to cosy country cottages. So you are on vacation and you are looking for a little excitement. That is part of what being on vacation means to me, taking the time to do things that you maybe didn’t do in the past. I know that many people take shore excursions when they are on a cruise, but did you know that you can also enjoy excursions when you are on a land vacation? I’m sure that you have done this in the past but you may not have thought about it being an actual excursion. What are some of the things that you could do and how do you go about locating them?

When we go on a cruise and the ship stops at the port you will see a flood of people walking the plank on their way to some sort of adventure. I know that my wife and I went on a beach excursion in the Caribbean one time and we ended up parasailing. We enjoyed it so much that we wanted to do it again but time didn’t permit. Living in South Florida it would be an easy thing for us to go up in a parasail but we never even considered it while we were at home, but when we went for a trip to Lake Tahoe we ended up finding a place that would take you out and let you parasail over the lake. It was beautiful and a lot of fun, a land vacation excursion at its best.

Another one of our favorite cruise excursions is to go on the catamaran trips. It seems that at least one port on our cruise holds this excursion for us, there really isn’t much more of an enjoyable time in our eyes. So when we had family in a couple years ago and made a February trip to Key West we rented a catamaran there that took us off the keys and let us snorkel in the ocean. It was a lot of fun and there was music and free rum punch, a great time indeed.
