Living in a golf resort community is fun, desert resort living in a gated golf community is a life of luxury. But did you know that many of these communities and the towns they are in allow you to drive your golf cart around on the streets? I remember not long ago when gasoline prices were approaching $4.50 and trending upward towards $5.00 per gallon many folks were looking for ways to save a little money. Yes, even in my high-class community.

Well, one way is to get yourself a moped for around town, yet many people feel they are inadequate to hold groceries and run errands and for the most part that is a concern. However, another option might be to get a golf cart, used golf carts start as low as $1500.00 - In Palm Desert, CA we have made Golf Carts street-legal here, the sidewalks around the communities are extra large and the bike lanes are too. This was one of the first California cities to allow them on the street with a nominal license fee to the city, it was a test project and a lot of research went into it in order to make sure it would be safe and it is. Other cities have modeled their plans around Palm Desert’s strategy and it has worked well.

I think it’s wonderful and recommend it, but everyone must decide for themselves.

The James E. Stewart Golf Course is located on Fredrick Douglas Ave off of N.E. 10th Street, right in the midst of Oklahoma City. The 9-hole 3,105-yard course was opened in 1999 and designed by Randy Heckenkemper. With a rating of 35.5 and Bermuda grass slope rating of 113, it has been considered by many to be the best 9-hole course in Oklahoma City. Mark Galloway serves as the Director of Golf.

Amenities here include a pro shop, snack bar and cart rental. A driving range and putting green are offered as part of practice facilities. The course has teamed up with The First Tee of Oklahoma City in order to increase the popularity of the game and to introduce new players to the game.

Players frequenting the 9-hole James E. Stewart Golf Course in OKC regard it as the perfect place to warm-up for an 18-hole game at the other Oklahoma City courses. Though it is generally considered ideal for beginners, it has a few tough holes for the seasoned players as well. The water that cuts across holes 4, 7 and 8 does pose a challenge. One the most well known golf courses on the island is Harbour Town Golf Links, home to the MCI Classic, one of the top events on the PGA Tour. Recently given the ranking of the 57th best course in the world by Golf Digest, Harbour Town is also bordered by the famous Harbour Town lighthouse and the neighboring marina features shops, fine dining, and other entertainment opportunities.

Sea Pines Ocean Course is among the oldest golf courses in the area, and was renovated in 1996 by PGA Pro Architect Mark Mccumber and features a signature oceanfront 15th hole with panoramic views of the water, as well as several lagoons and bunkers. This course is also one of two courses that are Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary courses within the Sea Pines resort.

Palmetto Dunes boasts an extensive lagoon system and bunkered greens. The George Fazio course is considered to be one of the most challenging courses on the island, and is the only par 70. I had the great pleasure of playing Jackson Park Golf Course while on a trip to Seattle, Washington a couple of weeks ago, and I want to take this opportunity to suggest if you ever get the chance you should give it a try yourself.

Jackson Park is one of Seattle’s municipal golf courses. Located just a couple miles north of downtown, in the summertime expect it to be full from dawn to dusk. We decided to go out there on a Monday afternoon. It was sunny, not a cloud in the sky, and about 80 degrees outside. We arrived a little before our 2:40 tee time and I was immediately taken aback by the number of people at the course. The tee sheet was completely full and people were lined up at the first tee waiting to tee off. I asked my buddy who joined us and is from Seattle if anyone worked up here and he said, “when it is sunny out here, everyone gets sick.” I believe it.

For a muni course, Jackson Park Golf Course is a really great course (most in the northwest are - the weather allows for faster greens and everything stays lush year round). It isn’t the longest thing you’ve ever seen, but for $28 bucks to walk, it’s a great deal (it costs another $30 to ride in a cart - maybe their roundabout way to prevent pollution and encourage walking).

Reviewing a Seattle golf course like this is an easy thing to do. The pace of play, though not great, was bearable, considering the number of golfers, and the service was relatively good.

The course starts out with a par five undulating down and then up a hill. It symbolizes the game you need for the entire course - hit it in the fairway and you are guaranteed a fun round. Hit it in the rough, and in all likelihood you are pitching out, not because the rough is that long or arduous, but because trees large and small line every hole, and more than likely if you end up in the rough you will be behind or under one.

My favorite hole on the course is number 7, a drivable par 4 (if you hit a bomb). It is tempting because the tee box is elevated, the green is large, and it looks shorter than it really is. There is water guarding the front right side of the green, but a sliver of fairway allows a perfectly placed tee shot to make its way to the green (I hit it in the water, but managed to get up and down for par).

If you are going to try to make it out to Jackson Park Golf Course in the summertime, make sure to get a tee time. And be careful, they have a weird rule that if you don’t show up at least 15 minutes early they reserve the right to give your tee time away. I didn’t experience this first hand but read about it on the Internet, so it must be true!!

The central valley of California has some quality municipal or public golf courses. Riverside Golf Course in Fresno is the site of the annual Fresno City Amateur Golf Championship. That alone should be a testament to the quality and challenge Riverside presents to the Average Joe as well as the accomplished scratch or low handicapper.

Riverside Golf Course was designed by “Billy” Bell and built in 1939 as a WPA project. This parkland-style course along the San Joaquin River, features expansive tree-lined fairways stretching over gently rolling terrain, a new lake bringing water into play on four holes and very small greens.

The course plays fairly long and with it’s new watering system and talented crew, the fairways have never looked better. The rough is kept high and thick for the City Amateur but cut back for regular play.

There are holes that deceive:

Number 3 begs for a long drive but too long a drive will put you into trouble because of a huge tree blocking an approach. Go left however, and you’re out of bounds. Just hit it straight and depending on the length you may find yourself with an odd downhill/side lie.

Number 4 looks nice and level but it’s actually uphill and can play as much as 2o yards longer. The new lake is to the right of the approach and green. Any ball hit slightly right of the green will either end up in a bunker or roll to the water.

Number 7 has a similar layout to 4 but without the water. What it does have is a large fairway bunker that swallows balls and thick rough on the left.

If you’re playing late in the day, Hole 9 will present a problem because of the sun staring directly at you as it sets.

The 10th Hole at Riverside is the first of what I feel are the best four holes in the central valley. A straight shot from the high up tee box will allow an easy shot to an undulating green. Remember all balls break to the water… yeah, right! The par 3, 11th hole features an uphill tee shot to a fast sloping green protected by bunkers. Number 12 takes your drive back down the hill with an approach that goes back up to a saddle-back and FAST green. Take a 3-wood or hybrid off the tee for a better approach. After you climb all the way back up the hill (the walk can be fairly tiring!) to the tee box on the 13th hole, take a breather! For now if you don’t hit your drive straight or slightly right, you’re gonna have to go back all the way down the hill to play your second shot - because drives that go left tend to roll all the way down to the 12th fairway.

Hole 15 presents a sloping green protected by front, left and right bunkers. A hybrid or long iron off the tee is the best club here.

The sun again hampers golfers on hole 16 as the it plays into the sun.

A mandatory drive of 150 yards over water is a must on hole 17. That doesn’t sound like much, but water has a way of making even the better Joes lose their length.

The closing hole features a dogleg right with strategically placed bunkers and tree lines. Drives of between 200-250 yards may find one of the bunkers if you fade the ball.

Make your tee time up to 7 days in advance of your play date.

Distances: From California’s Central Coast about 2:30 hours. San Francisco Bay Area about 2-3 hours. Southern California maybe 4-5 hours.

Range: Excellent except when mats are being used. First class practice green.

Pro Shop: Full pro shop and restaurant. Riding carts and pull carts. Clubs for rent.
