So, you’ve done your research and discovered the wonderful vacation spot of Sanibel Island. Located right off the shore of Fort Myers in Florida, it is a very popular family vacation destination. As with any Florida vacation, your itinerary will likely include soaking up some sun. But after that’s done, what is there to do on a Florida Vacation? The answer is plenty.

One whole side of the island is covered in wetlands and marshes. Instead of finding the billboards and flashing lights of a big city, you’ll bee tropical plants and trees lining the road. Small, inconspicuous signs will point you to the areas attractions. There are art galleries to visit and experience some of the local culture. If shopping is your thing you can visit the many boutiques and shops on the island. But one thing you should never miss is one of several wildlife refuges on the island. This will really allow you to see the beautiful and abundant wildlife of Florida. The J.N. Darling National Wildlife Refuge is 5,000 acres in size and has been around since 1945. Not only will you see the many birds but also otters, turtles, alligators and much more.

Visiting the beaches of Sanibel Island is also a great activity to occupy a few days. Walking along the beautiful white sand beaches and watching the sea birds is delightfully relaxing. Some beaches like Bowman’s Beach have barbeques on sit and an outdoor shower. Others like Tarpon Bay Beach are great for recreational vehicles. And should you find yourself fascinated by the shells you find on your Sanibel Island then be sure to pay the Bailey Matthews Shell Museum a visit.

Lighthouse Beach is a must see for anyone with a penchant for historic lighthouses. Not only is the lighthouse there a historic site, it’s still fully functioning. Not only can you tour the lighthouse, you can go fishing at the pier. There is even a path that takes you on a nature trail through the neighboring wetlands. Perhaps you can bring a bike and make a day of it. You can even get a guided bike tour of the island, or roller blade tour if you prefer.

If something slower and more relaxing is your speed, try the Dunes Golf and Tennis Club. They have a championship 18-hole course that has amazing views to see along the way. They also offer clinics and individual lessons for those not so accustomed to golf. Water sports are also very popular on the island. Swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, canoes, kayaking, and fishing are just a few things you can find.

Always keep in mind that while accommodations on the island are plentiful, it is a popular vacation destination. If you are traveling during typically busy vacation months, book well in advance. Other than that, every need you could possibly have is available on the island. Whether going as a couple, alone, or the whole family, Sanibel Island is the perfect destination.
